第一次潜入海底，列永同博士马上被亲眼所见的景象所惊呆了，那是怎样的奇異的世界啊：五颜六色的珊瑚礁、千姿百态的海草，各种憨态可掬的海洋生物，以及种种神秘的水下奇观等一个五彩斑斓的世界，展现在他的眼前，“站在陆地上观察海洋，是永远无法想象海底世界的瑰丽奇異的。只有亲眼看到那些摄人心魄的景象，海洋才不再是死寂一片，而是拥有绚丽多姿的生命。”也就从那时开始，他有了把海底世界拍出来，与众人分享的想法。

近年来，海洋生态受到严重破坏，到了刻不容缓的地步。列永同博士对比了数十年前的海洋变化，“以香港周边海域为例，在我刚学习潜水拍摄时，那里的海底世界令人赏心悦目、流连忘返，但今非昔比，如今那里的浮游生物几近绝跡，好多甚至已经灭绝。人们不知道，仅是日常生活中所用的洗涤剂注入海里，都会影响浮游生物的生长，甚至直接杀死浮游生物。另外，目前许多塑料袋等垃圾倒入海里，被海龟误食後，便会阻碍海龟消化，使其浮在水面慢慢死去等”

为实现从基层着手拯救海洋的崇高理想，推广水下生态资源保育，列永同博士创立了：水下生态资源保育基金——致力透过不同的途径让公众认识水下生态资源，以唤起大家对海洋保育的关注、重视、响应与支持。该基金以教育工作为重点，举办大型的海洋及水下生物摄影展和专题讲座，定期开办海洋保育证书课程；还设立奖学金，专为培育更多的优秀海洋生物学家及海洋环境保育专家；另外，还出版有《蓝海伊甸之探索海洋海洋生物知多少》，该书辑录皆为精美的深海摄影作品，记录有多种珍贵的海洋生物，不但穷尽细节、色彩生动，还活灵活现，向世人展现了一个色彩斑斓、美妙绝伦的海洋生物群。“该摄影集为慈善义卖，筹得款项全数拔捐基金会，作为本港及内地推动海洋及水下生态资源保育，以及相关教育工作的经费。”
